One of the most gratifying moments in the process of making a picture book, at least for text-only authors like myself, is when we get to see images from the artist. Watching the illustrations develop over time, from first sketches to final art, is a thrill I can’t quite describe. We’re often reminded that picture books are a collaboration between two people, and never does that feel truer than when watching word and image come together.

Powerhouse poet and publisher Kwame Alexander is book talking Soaring ‘20s books, which will be released by his Versify imprint, including Darshana Khiani’s HOW TO WEAR A SARI and NoNieqa Ramos’s YOUR MAMA and BEAUTY WOKE.
Valerie Bolling moderated a virtual story time at the Fairfield University Bookstore in which former NFL champion (Super Bowl LI, playing for the Patriots) and current reading champion (Share the Magic Foundation), Malcolm Mitchell, read his newest book, MY VERY FAVORITE BOOK IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD. Valerie also has been named to the 12x12 picture book community’s first-ever Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, and was a guest on The Brown Bookshelf talking about her book journey for LET'S DANCE!
LOUIS (illustrated by Julie Rowan-Zoch) has been named to the Texas Library Association's 2x2 Reading List. Congrats!

Christina Soontornvat racked up lots of hardware at the American Library Associations Youth Media Awards, including TWO Newbery honors, for her middle grade fantasy, A WISH IN THE DARK, and her middle grade nonfiction, ALL THIRTEEN. ALL THIRTEEN also earned a Sibert honor. Her book cover is running out of room!
Kirsten Larson (WOOD, WIRE, WINGS) appeared on the Primary Source Podcast with Tom Bober to talk resources and teaching strategies to help educators use primary sources in the classroom.
For World Read Aloud Day, Scholastic created these videos from Isabella Kung (NO FUZZBALL!) and Sam Wedelich (CHICKEN LITTLE) extolling the benefits of reading aloud. Isabella also appeared in this Scholastic video, How To Keep Up the World Read Aloud Day Momentum.

COW BOY IS NOT A COWBOY (Gregory Barrington), NO VOICE TOO SMALL (Lindsay H. Metcalf), and SIMON IN THE ART MUSEUM (Christina Soontornvat) were nominated for the Reading the West Book Awards.
TeachingBooks.net featured M. O. Yuksel and her debut book, IN MY MOSQUE. School Library Journal gave the book a starred review, saying, “This marvelous, welcoming book on mosques, Muslims, and Islam is a must, offering foundational knowledge on the world’s second largest religion.”

She revealed the cover for her picture book, WHERE THREE OCEANS MEET, on Mr. Schu’s blog. Finally, her middle grade, RED, WHITE, AND WHOLE has been named a Spring 2021 Kids’ Indie Next Top Ten Title.
